In spring 2008, ITS initiated The Portal Project, an effort to develop a new enterprise Web portal that will serve as the gateway to UNC-Chapel Hill’s online applications and resources. The Portal is an important companion project supporting the University’s ConnectCarolina project (also known as the Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP project). ConnectCarolina is the University’s largest non-capital-improvement project in its history and will replace out-of-date legacy systems by creating a new, integrated management solution for student, human resources, payroll and financial systems.
The Portal will serve as the primary access point to the University’s transactional systems. Initially, the Portal will be the gateway to the new student admissions system scheduled to launch in Mid-July 2009. Longer term, the Portal will provide access to all of the University’s systems including the student, human resources, finance and business systems that are being developed through ERP.
During the initial phase of the Portal implementation, the project team will construct a solid foundation on which to build-out the University’s future portal services. In essence, the Portal will be built in stages, continuing to grow and evolve as ConnectCarolina and other University systems become available.
For members of the UNC-Chapel Hill Community, the portal will offer a high-quality user experience by providing an intuitive online interface, single-sign-on capability, and the efficient delivery of University services, resources and communications. Portal will be functional for all audiences - prospective and current students, faculty, staff, guests and others, by early 2011.
